Audi Q7 is not a new car. The first generation came out in 2005 and it was a great success. The market was very open to full-size crossover SUVs and Audi was-and still is- a well known and highly trusted manufacturer so everything was perfect for Q7. This latest incarnation of the model offers a different, more fuel efficient and stronger diesel engine as well as some other posh things, but let’s start from the beginning.

Having in mind that it is a SUV, we must say what a wonderful job Audi designers have done with this car. It is big, with up to 7 seats, and round looking and it has every opportunity to seem logy and useless. But it doesn’t look like this. It’s surprisingly sleek and smooth looking.

The front features the large Audi grille with appropriate headlights and fog lights placed very low. From the side you can see mildly ascending line that makes the rear windows look smaller. Still, they are big enough not to make even the people in the far back seem claustrophobic. The back looks well designed with large red backlights.

You also get power liftgate as standard and you can choose from 18 to 21-inch wheels which is a significant difference in size and this can really change the look of the car.

The interior is roomy and nice looking. It is no design milestone, but it is very practical. The instruments are visible and easy to read with beautiful back light. Next to them there is a multimedia and navigation screen which is set pretty high which makes it easy to use without turning your attention from the road for too long. Under the screen there are two large air vents and under them there are various other knobs and buttons. Dominating the central console is the stick of the automatic transmission, and behind it there is a large and comfortable arm rest with cup holders. Leather seats are very comfortable and you feel secure in them and the front ones are heated as is the steering wheel. The back is also large and roomy and even the third row has enough space.

Special treat is Audi’s MultiMedia Interface. It has voice activation, but with some additional features. For example, you can say a command-such as “I need gas”-and the system, which is connected to navigation will calculate and map the options closest to you. For passengers sitting in the rear, there is a dual screen entertainment system available and Audi Connect Wi-Fi.

All materials in the interior are of very high quality and this makes the stay very enjoyable. The second row is sliding and both rear rows of seats fold flat to give you loads of storage space.

Under the hood

There are three different engines available, but all of them are 3.0 l. The newest option is turbocharged V6 diesel with 240 hp and 406 lb-ft of torque which got 15 hp more than the previous version, but also better fuel efficiency which now comes to 19 mpg in the city and 28 on the highway. The other two petrol options are 3.0T Premium with 280 hp and 295 lb-ft of torque and more powerful 3.0T S line Prestige with 333 hp and 325 lb-ft of torque. All of them are paired up with an 8-speed automatic transmission with overdrive. Optionally, you can take adaptive air suspension.

To sum up

With the starting MSRP of $46,800-$60,550 this is not a cheap car, but having in mind what it offers and the reputation of the manufacturer we can’t really say it is not worth it. Generally owners love these cars, and if a crossover SUV is what you need, Audi Q7 is a good option.
