What is one thing that many Dodge Viper owners have in common? They love to show off the speed of their car. We get that. The Viper is iconic for that very speed, and if those who own one want to show it off, we’re not opposing them. Nonetheless, the past few years have seen the rise of some dark-horse competitors to the Viper, as well as some very powerful competition from the typical competitors. Dodge’s response? Read on and find out.

So, What’s New?

After the Viper GTS completely failed to compete with the Corvette ZR1, the SRT (Street and Racing Technology) decided to buckle down revamp the Viper for 2014. The result is the 2014 Dodge Viper SRT TA. Designed meet track specifications more closely than anything else, the SRT TA answers a lot of the concerns from the previous year. New specifications include a lighter body, tighter handling, and a brand new color: TA Orange.

Exterior

The actual design of the TA doesn’t vary far from the regular Viper; in fact, the exterior is very close to a regular Viper. It all starts with a base Viper (which is lighter than the GTS). Familiar Bilstein dampers (per the GTS) are added and tuned for firmness. It also sports a carbon fiber rear wing and matte-finished Sidewinder II wheels. The slightly varied Crusher Orange paint job adds a not-so-subtle look the classic aggressive Viper body.

Interior

The interior leaves much to desired if you are hoping for something fancy. The vinyl and cloth interior lets the driver know that the TA is built for business; and that business is track speed and performance. The orange stitching on the steering wheel, seats, and throughout the interior adds a nice touch, but overall, the inside is very utilitarian.

Performance and Specs

“TA” stands for “Time Attack,” a moniker the SRT team choose in order to convey their goals. The TA is being developed to increase track performance, and the overall specs reflect that. The TA has the 640-hp, 8.4-liter V-10 that comes in the other Vipers. The suspension has been tuned to be firmer, and the springs and anti-rollbar have been made more track-friendly. Overall, the car has been designed to remove seconds from the track time -and that’s about it.

Final Impression

The 2014 Viper SRT TA is not the next ACR, nor does it claim to be. True speed fans will have to wait for that one. However, if you love to take your Viper to the track, but have complaints about the handling, cornering, etc., this may just be your Viper. Starting around $116,00 means that it may just be in grasp for man, although only 33 models will be produced at first. Overall this car wasn’t what we’d hoped it be -but it does what it is designed to do; track performance is increased, while decreasing weight and slapping on a new paint job. Tell us what you think.
