Walk into any gym and I guarantee you will see a plethora of the classic protein shaker lining the floors, next to treadmills and free weights alike. For every type of shaker will be an equal number of varying supplements within. When you ask what’s inside, without a doubt, the response you’ll get the most is:

“Oh, it’s such and such protein.”

Protein, specifically whey protein, has been a staple for the health and fitness world and with good reason. It works. Time after time, studies confirm that, taken post-workout, whey protein can radically increase recovery and strength. Which means less time needed to shake the soreness and more time to push bigger and badder plate numbers. For all the benefits you reap with protein, let’s face it, the stuff doesn’t always taste as good as it should. Fear not, I have a few ways that you can turn your protein shake into something that doesn’t involve pinching your nose and chugging.

1.) Choco-Peanut Butter

– 1 cup of ice
– 1 medium banana
– 1 or 2 scoops chocolate protein powder
– 1 tablespoon of natural peanut butter
– 1 cup of almond, soy, or regular milk (more or less to taste)

Extras: (throw this in for nutritional bonus points)
– 1 oz. of cacao nibs
– 1 oz. of flax seeds

2.) Berries Galore
– 1 cup of mixed frozen berries
– 1 or 2 scoops of strawberry protein powder
– 1 cup of almond, soy, or regular milk (more or less to taste)

Extras:
– 1 oz. of Chia seeds
– 3 oz. of Acai berry juice

3.) Down in the Tropics
– 1 cup of ice
– 1 sliced kiwi
– 1 small banana
– 4 oz. of sliced pineapple
– 4 sliced strawberries
– 1 or 2 scoops of vanilla protein powder
– 1 cup of almond, soy, or regular milk (more or less to taste)

Extras:
– 3 oz. of pure aloe juice (trust me, you’ll never know it’s there)

4.) The Green Monster
– 1 cup of mixed frozen berries
– 1 stalk of kale (stay with me on this now…)
– 4 oz. broccoli
– 1 medium banana (kills the taste of greens)
– 1 scoop of vanilla or strawberry protein powder

Extras:
– 1 oz. of Flax or Chia (or both) seeds
– 4 oz. of 100% vegetable and fruit blend (think Odwala or Green Machine)

5.) Orange Dreamsicle
– 1 cup of ice
– 1 or 2 scoops vanilla protein powder
– 4 oz. vanilla almond or soy milk
– 4 oz. orange juice

Extras:
– 1 oz. of golden berries (if you want a more tart taste)
– 1 oz. of Chia seeds (because why the heck not?)

There you have it. A solution to the problem of terrible taste. You can also use these as a foundation to create your own culinary protein masterpieces. Cheers!
