After dragging your body from the bed and slamming down on the alarm clock, there’s a good chance that your morning routine begins with one thing: Coffee. 9 to 5 warriors, which encompass the majority, have a need to stay fully functional in order to enter the battle of paperwork, co-workers, and management. Unfortunately, the daily grind throws them into that familiar slump just around lunch time then a couple hours later and again on the way to pick up the kids from school. What do we do to recharge? We reach for more coffee. Cream and sugar help to kill the coffee bitterness that people hate yet so desperately need. Once the day is done, the 9 to 5 warriors slumber only to fight the same war the next day.

For many, coffee has become a crutch and is being used in place of crucial rest and smart nutrition. While a raw food lifestyle is next to impossible for most, everyone can harness the power of plants in order to get that much needed boost throughout the day. I’m going to review five supplements that can keep you awake and alert while making you forget all about your caffeine-laced friend.

1.)    Spirulina (The Greek myth?)

Available in powder and capsule form, Spirulina is a form of blue-green algae that is PACKED with trace minerals, antioxidants, and B-vitamins. It’s safe, it’s natural, and it’s a powerhouse.

2.)    Chlorella (Seriously… What’s with the Greek myths?)

Think of Chlorella as the loyal companion of Spirulina. It is a green algae that contains an impressive nutritional profile which is high in protein, vitamins and minerals. It is also available in powder and capsule form.

3.)    Kombucha (Are you going to post anything we can pronounce?)

If you want to talk about potent, look no further than Kombucha. It is a fermented tea that is loaded with pro-biotics and antioxidants. It’s sold in glass bottles at your basic health food stores. If you’re feeling bold, you can make your own.

4.)    Raw Apple Cider Vinegar (An apple a day…)

I know what you’re thinking: Vinegar! Don’t let it scare you away though. This drink packs the nutritional punch you need to keep going. Pro-biotics, antioxidants, vitamins, and minerals should make this a daily go-to. Try mixing it with different juices or add hot water, honey and lemon for a soothing health drink.

5.)    Green tea (Hey, isn’t there…)

Let me start off by saying “Yes, there is caffeine in this.” Now that the gasps have stopped, let me explain. The amount of caffeine is miniscule compared with its darker counterpart. (15 mg vs. 100 mg. – See the difference?) What’s more, Green Tea’s boost comes from all of the antioxidants and minerals, not the caffeine. It’s a classic and classics are always in style.
