Kim Wilde (52), one of the biggest female stars of the 1980s has enjoyed an unexpected success on the Internet as the six-minute video clip of her singing her 1981 hit ‘Kids in America’ accompanied by her brother Ricky Wilde on guitar, filmed on a cell phone on a train went viral. The reactions to the candid footage have been largely positive and the singer tweeted: “Truly, I am overwhelmed and confused at such a huge reaction to my night out on the tiles. Making me giggle a LOT.”

The career of Kim Wilde started off in 1981, when her debut single ‘Kids in America’ became an almost instant success in her native UK and throughout Europe. Her following singles ‘Chequered Love’, ‘Cambodia’, ‘View From a Bridge’ and ‘The Second Time’ did extremely well in the UK and the rest of Europe, but her American success came in 1987 when her Hi-NRG cover of The Supremes 1966 classic Motown hit ‘You Keep Me Hangin’ On’ went straight to number one on the US singles chart of 1987, making her the fifth British female artist to go number one in the US ever.

As it was the case with many of the 1980s stars, her fame somewhat faded in the 1990s, but Kim Wilde continued to record and perform throughout the 1990s and the 2010s and she is currently recording an album to be released some time in 2013. Kim Wilde is widely regarded as one of the best female singers and songwriters of the 1980s (in addition to being one of the most beautiful ones, quite obviously) and remains a huge star in Europe, particularly in the UK and Germany.

The ‘train video’ was filmed by a fellow train passenger who was obviously genuinely thrilled by the sight and sound of the 1980s star singing carelessly on a train: “After a truly rubbish day, I got on the train home and couldn’t get a seat, a man pulled out his guitar “Oh here we go!” I thought. Then a drunken woman starts singing. Hang on a minute, I know that voice?! It really was KIM WILDE! This totally made my day.”

Kim Wilde’s voice still sounds perfect and this candid video is simply great. Enjoy!
