What is it about ancient Chinese civilizations and super foods? I’m not complaining though. They have provided numerous super foods as well as a chance for me to write about them. Goji Berries have been consumed for thousands of years and their popularity is still alive and well today. Grown primarily in China, Mongolia, and regions of Tibet, these tiny berries pack a powerful punch of antioxidants and vitamins and minerals. (Oh my!) A scoop of these a day can help boost your immune system, protect your health, and increase your performance (in the gym and out). Let’s take a look at a few ways this super food can change your life.

1.) Goji Berries and Exercise

Goji berries contain 18 amino acids, which makes them an essential recovery food. It also has vitamin A , B1, B2, B6 and vitamin E. It gets better though. The berries are a great source of sesquiterpenoids. (Yeah, don’t bother trying to pronounce it. You’ll just hurt yourself.) What does that mean for you? Sesquiterpenoids help increase the release of human growth hormone. This is great news for those of you trying to pack on lean muscle mass. Eat a serving of the berries post-workout to help with recovery.

2.) Goji Berries and Eye Health

Last time I checked, good eye health was what everyone wanted. (Right?) Goji berries are here to help with that. They have high levels of vitamin A, which means a lot of beta carotene, as well as lutein and zeaxanthin. (Dr. Oz likes to talk about zeaxanthin. Your wife can verify.) As for lutein, if you have an amino acid supplement, check the label. Good chance the shining star is going to be lutein. Together all of these are extremely important for maintaining healthy eyes.

3.) Goji Berries and Immune System

After reviewing all of the nutrients that this little berry is packed with, it won’t be a surprise to hear that it is going to be your immune system’s best buddy. The vitamins, trace minerals, and antioxidants help build up your immune system as well as aid in the removal of toxins. Simply put, you might want to stock up on goji berries when flu season shows up in your town.

They keep you healthy, protect your sight, and spot you in the gym. If it already isn’t, this super food needs to be on your shelf (Right next to the protein and creatine.)
