The news that the legendary Beatle Paul McCartney (70) would perform with the surviving members of Nirvana at the at Madison Square Garden as part of the 12.12.12. Sandy Relief Concert spread fast among both the Beatles fans and the fans of Nirvana.

While this was not the first time the surviving members of Nirvana played together since the 1994 death of Kurt Cobain, it will surely go down in history as the most iconic one. Dave Grohl and Paul McCartney had also collaborated previously, so this Nirvana feat. The Macca reunion didn’t really come out of the blue.

According to Sir Paul, Dave Grohl rang him and ‘asked him to come along to “jam with some mates”.

“I didn’t really know who they were. They are saying how good it is to be back together. I said ‘Whoa? You guys haven’t played together for all that time? – McCartney continued – “And somebody whispered to me ‘That’s Nirvana. You’re Kurt.’ I couldn’t believe it.”

Yes, that’s a nice story, but probably not particularly true.

Anyway, Sir Paul McCartney, Dave Grohl, Krist Novoselic and Nirvana’s fourth unofficial member Pat Smear gave a tremendous performance last night. In addition to being a wonderful curiosity, this reunion was also a very smart move – in case the Nirvana members found another grunge singer, it would be obvious that ‘he is not Kurt’.

However, this is something different – this is Sir Paul McCartney playing with Nirvana, the combination hardly anyone could ever think of. Enjoy a part of this special performance in the video below:
