Sergey Brin (39) is one of the world’s most successful Internet entrepreneurs, scientist,  the co-founder of Google, philanthropist and the man whose wealth is currently estimated at  $20.3 billion, but perhaps even more importantly, Brin is the man with vision, courage, philosophy and ethics. It takes a special talent to know what is it that you really want to achieve every waking hour of your life and money and success then come as a logical aftermath of the life with purpose and vision. Brin’s career is the best example of this.

Sergey Brin

Born in 1973 as Sergey Mikhaylovich Brin (Russian: Сергей Михайлович Брин) in Moscow, then USSR to well-educated Jewish parents, Brin had an opportunity to learn the value of freedom of information (as well as the value of freedom in general, for that matter) in his very early age, as his parents were among the millions of the oppressed citizens under an authoritarian regime. Their success and chances to pursue their dreams were cut short both because of their ethnic and political background.

In 1979 the Brin family emigrated to the United States where Sergey’s father became the mathematics professor at the University of Maryland, his mother became a researcher at NASA’s Goddard Space Flight Center and Sergey himself would co-develop the most successful Internet business to date.

The Creation of Google

While acquiring a PhD degree in computer science at Stanford University, Sergey met his partner Larry Page. The two young men soon discovered they had similar ideas and went on developing their new search engine. It was in the dormitory room at Stanford that Google was born out of cheap computers and long hours of work, backed by the funds from friends, family and fellow students.

The rest is history. God knows if the world we live today would have been the same had Brin and Page never met in the late 1990s. Google is most definitely the invention that helped define the Internet and the way we are able to find data in seconds, much like the printing press was in its time. Only a man with a vision could deliver such a product.

As mentioned above, a man who was born under an oppressive regime knows the  real value of information and freedom. Experiences of Brin and his parents in Soviet Russia surely helped him define his beliefs in the power of free information. The importance and knowledge can’t be emphasized enough and since knowledge is basically a search for information, the track record of a society that hides the information to keep people frightened and obedient can’t be good at all.

Sergey Brin’s philosophy that “knowledge is always good, and certainly always better than ignorance” summed up in Google’s motto “Organize the world’s information and make it universally accessible and useful” surely qualify him as the true Enlightenment Man, the man who is able to help people better understand the world, others, themselves and ultimately make this planet a slightly better place.

Of course, things don’ t always run smoothly, so  Google had to leave China as the censorship required by the government was against the company’s policy and Sergey stated that: “”For us it has always been a discussion about how we can best fight for openness on the Internet. We believe that this is the best thing that we can do for preserving the principles of the openness and freedom of information on the Internet.”

The whole world might be a really nice place one day and it will be so thanks to the people like Sergey Brin.
